Life-Cycle Analysis (LCA) is a comprehensive methodology that involves the compilation and evaluation of inputs, outputs, and potential environmental impacts throughout the entire life cycle of a product or building. This holistic approach meticulously examines each stage, identifying processes and constituents, and assessing their environmental effects. The analysis spans both upstream considerations, starting from the point of manufacture or raw materials extraction, and downstream aspects, encompassing transportation, use, maintenance, and end-of-life considerations. This thorough examination, often referred to as “cradle to grave,” ensures a holistic understanding of the environmental footprint associated with a product or building.

Taking the concept even further, the “cradle to cradle” approach places emphasis on recycling and reuse at the end of a product’s life, as opposed to disposal. This forward-thinking perspective promotes the idea that materials can be part of a continuous cycle, minimizing waste and maximizing the efficiency of resources. By incorporating “cradle to cradle” principles within Life Cycle Analysis, we not only assess the environmental impact of a product throughout its existence but also contribute to the development of sustainable practices that prioritize circular economies and reduce the overall ecological footprint.
