    Overview

The Hellenic American Educational Foundation (HAEF) Preschool & Kindergarten is an 8,300 m2 educational facility which was certified with LEED v3 for Building Design & Construction – Schools at Platinum level in 2014, thus becoming the 1st ever LEED Platinum building in Greece.

The Project team implemented a variety of strategies to reduce energy and water use, create a healthy indoor environment, rationalize resource demand, and implement innovative strategies. The roof is covered with a green roof enhancing local biodiversity, mitigating urban heat-island effect, and enhancing rainwater management.

The building is equipped with a horizontal ground-source heat exchanger and heat pump units meeting for cooling and heating needs as well as with a solar thermal array for domestic hot water production. Rainwater harvesting and low flow and flush water fixtures reduce potable water demand. The creation of high-quality indoor spaces has been achieved with sufficient daylight penetration. The Project is a real case-study of a sustainable project enabling the provision of specific lessons to the students of the entire campus.
